A grassroots initiative in Hull is redefining energy access by establishing an energy club that utilizes locally sourced renewable energy to lower electricity costs for residents. Dubbed Power Hull, this voluntary group plans to create a community network of buildings equipped with rooftop solar panels and battery storage, effectively distributing power within the community.
The project launched its first installation at Lonsdale Community Centre, backed by a £20,000 grant. Kevin Paulson, a member of the group, revealed that this system would save the center approximately £3,000 per year. This significant saving will directly benefit the community by enhancing services, including supporting local food banks.
Power Hull has made strides in expanding its efforts and has recently been awarded an additional £34,500 grant from Great British Energy for the project. The initiative aims to create a mini-network referred to as PlanGeo, named after a local electricity substation. Paulson highlighted the advantages of the energy club model, explaining that the differential rates between energy exported to the grid versus energy consumed locally can significantly benefit members. For instance, while homeowners with solar panels might receive a mere 3p to 15p per unit for excess energy fed back to the grid, members of the energy club can earn up to 17p per kilowatt hour.
Ellen Clarke, another member of the group, emphasized the local impact of the initiative. “One of the huge benefits is all the money stays local,” she noted, indicating that the energy producers, including the Lonsdale Centre, would receive more for selling their generated energy within this network, effectively eliminating profit margins taken by larger energy companies.
In tackling broader issues such as fuel poverty—an alarming concern as around one in five households in Hull struggle with it—Lauren Duguid pointed out that people often face difficult choices between heating and food. This energy club approach not only aims to provide affordable electricity but also aims to strengthen community ties through sustainable energy solutions.
Overall, the transformation proposed by Power Hull showcases an innovative way to enhance energy security, economic savings, and community welfare, setting a model that could be replicated elsewhere.
