The Scottish energy landscape is set for a massive transformation as SSE, the company managing the electricity grid in northern Scotland, announces a monumental £33 billion investment over the next five years. This significant financial commitment aims primarily at enhancing the high-voltage grid capacity essential for transferring energy from the resource-rich north to southern customers.

Two-thirds of the investment is earmarked for advancements in wiring and infrastructure, including the construction of tall pylons and large substations, which have sparked a wave of criticism from locals concerned about potential impacts on the natural beauty of the Highlands and rural Aberdeenshire.

The remaining third of the investment will focus on improving lower-voltage wiring in regions where SSE maintains a distribution monopoly. This includes crucial upgrades to support new technologies like air heat pumps and electric vehicle charging at homes, representing a £5 billion allocation aimed at modernizing energy consumption in both northern Scotland and central southern England.

Part of SSE’s strategy also includes a lower share of focus on offshore wind development—though it remains a key player in this sector, with ongoing projects like the Dogger Bank wind farm, designed to be the largest in the world, and the ambitious Berwick Bank array set to follow suit.

SSE’s new CEO, Martin Pibworth, expressed confidence in the detailed and well-funded nature of these plans, underscoring the successful raise of £2 billion from existing investors that caused a notable spike (16%) in share prices. This budget is supported by revenue from existing assets and anticipated debt funding.

In terms of workforce, SSE is committed to expanding its networks transmission division by five times, increasing its staff to 2,500 through strategic internal recruitment and outreach to communities seeking employment to develop the new infrastructure.

Despite these positive developments, there’s a significant backlash regarding the scale of SSE’s 11 major transmission projects. The Highland Council has voiced strong criticism of a controversial power line stretching 107 miles from Caithness to Beauly, emphasizing concerns over landscape disruption and the scale of proposed substations.

Pibworth addressed these community concerns by stressing SSE’s commitment to consultation, having conducted over 250 community meetings. He argues that the rewiring of Scotland is essential for facilitating renewable energy transmission, ensuring a secure and reliable energy supply, and ultimately reducing dependency on volatile international energy markets.

He also acknowledged the ongoing political discourse regarding the affordability of the transition to green energy but maintained that renewables are the cheapest energy source for consumers in the long term. SSE’s plans have been positively received, drawing support from political figures like Sir Keir Starmer, who praised the investment during a parliamentary session.

Additionally, to accommodate the workforce needed for these transformational projects, SSE has set a target to construct 1,000 new homes, later converting them to affordable or social housing. This initiative reflects SSE’s commitment not only to modernize Scotland’s energy infrastructure but also to contribute to local community needs.

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
