A call for action is echoing from the fire service regarding the safety of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which are crucial in harnessing renewable energy generated by wind and solar farms. These systems utilize thousands of lithium-ion batteries stored in containers, but recent warnings from fire officials highlight significant risks related to fire safety. Henry Griffin, Suffolk’s deputy chief fire officer, has labeled these battery farms as an “emerging risk” amidst growing concerns from communities.
While the government asserts that there are rigorous safety standards in place, Griffin requests that fire services gain more authority to enforce safety measures, emphasizing their current limited role in providing only advice rather than having regulatory powers akin to those for commercial properties. He points out that the extensive scale of BESS necessitates that firefighters learn new techniques, as fires resulting from battery malfunctions can last for extended periods and release toxic vapor clouds.
Expert Prof. Paul Christensen elaborates on the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly their susceptibility to “thermal runaway.” This phenomenon occurs when batteries are damaged or overcharged, leading to potentially explosive reactions fueled by toxic gases and excessive heat. Prof. Christensen reassures that these batteries are generally safe when operated within specified limits, yet the risks remain concerning.
Suffolk is already home to several BESS sites, with plans for more, including a large-scale BESS linked to the ambitious £600 million Sunnica solar farm project. As more battery projects emerge, such as those in Bramford and Halesworth, local residents express their fears. Dr. Catherine Judkins, leading the “Say No to Sunnica” community group, emphasizes that the potential for catastrophic fires is alarming, citing that when BESS catch fire, they can burn for hours or even days, emitting toxic substances that could necessitate mass evacuations.
Although battery fires at storage sites are infrequent in the UK, regulation falls under the Health and Safety Executive, ensuring that operators follow strict safety protocols. Nonetheless, concerns linger about the inherent risks associated with the rapid growth of battery storage infrastructure. West Suffolk MP Nick Timothy highlights additional vulnerabilities, citing the nearby RAF Mildenhall and the possibility of sabotage.
The government remains adamant that expanded renewable energy sources, including BESS, are essential for safeguarding families against future energy disruptions. Yet, as battery storage projects proliferate, the balance between green energy advancements and public safety continues to draw significant scrutiny and calls for rigorous evaluations.
