An innovative couple from Essex, Terrence and Lesley Bridges, are paving the way for energy-efficient living by trialing a revolutionary heating system that utilizes a data centre in their garden shed. Known as HeatHub, this compact unit with over 500 computers has drastically reduced their energy expenses, bringing their monthly bill down from £375 to a remarkable £40.
The HeatHub, designed by Thermify, not only serves as an efficient heating solution by capturing the heat produced by its computers but also forms part of a larger initiative under the UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project. This project aims to provide low-income households with sustainable energy options. In conjunction with the HeatHub, the Bridges also installed solar panels which further aid in lowering their energy costs.
Terrence highlights how the new system has improved their home’s warmth, essential for his wife who suffers from spinal stenosis. The couple reports that there’s a noticeable comfort level, stating they no longer need to visit saunas due to the effective heating. The HeatHub is part of a broader ambition to create clean, green energy solutions, blending data processing with eco-friendliness, according to Thermify CEO Travis Theune.
While the current pilot phase focuses on the Bridges’ home, there are plans to expand the use of HeatHubs to 50 more households, as confirmed by Daniel Greenwood from Eastlight Community Homes. This initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of such innovative technologies are accessible to all, propelling the UK towards a greener future.
Data centres, crucial in operating our modern digital world, contribute significantly to energy consumption, estimated at 2.5% of the UK’s electricity use.
