NHS Grampian is exploring the revolutionary potential of geothermal energy by considering drilling deep underground in Aberdeen to harvest heat from granite. This ambitious project could involve creating a borehole reaching depths of up to 1.5 miles (approximately 2.5 km) as part of a feasibility study aimed at significantly cutting the health board’s heating expenses.
The inspiration comes from the success of geothermal technology, which pumps cold water deep underground where it is warmed naturally by earth’s heat, returning it to the surface hot enough for use in residential and commercial heating. This technique is usually associated with volcanic regions like Iceland, where it provides heat to as much as 90% of homes, but expert studies indicate that similar potential exists in the geothermal granite deposits beneath Aberdeen.
In comparison, the recently operational geothermal well at the Eden Project in Cornwall, which reaches 3.1 miles (5 km) and began providing heat as temperatures dropped in June 2023, showcases the viability of such systems even in non-volcanic locales. While drilling costs are high—estimated at around £1 million per kilometer—the potential for sustainable energy generation makes it attractive for long-term investment.
The feasibility study conducted by TownRock Energy in collaboration with NHS Grampian pinpointed the significant renewable heating capabilities that a geothermal solution could provide, particularly for the Foresterhill Health Campus in Aberdeen, where the energy bill reportedly hovers around £1 million monthly.
Future stages of the project will focus on demonstrating the proposed technology’s viability, with an estimated borehole drilling expense of at least £2.45 million. NHS Grampian’s energy manager, Michael Black, noted the need for extensive collaboration with partners and exploration of funding opportunities to move forward.
In a broader vision, NHS Grampian is also engaging with local universities to investigate the feasibility of extending geothermal heating solutions to residential areas, potentially transforming the local energy landscape. According to David Townsend, the chief executive of TownRock Energy, detailed assessments revealed that non-volcanic regions like Aberdeen can indeed support geothermal systems with the right technological advancements.
This innovative initiative not only aims to address NHS Grampian’s heating challenges but could also provide renewable energy solutions for the wider community, marking a significant step towards sustainability in energy consumption for both healthcare and residential sectors.
