This year’s burning of fossil fuels is expected to release a record-high 38.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to the latest Global Carbon Budget report, showcasing the slow progress of global efforts to combat climate change. As leaders gather for the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, concerns are raised about meeting international climate targets as emissions increase by 1.1% compared to 2024.
However, the report also highlights a significant trend: despite rising emissions, the growth rate has slowed considerably in the past decade. From 2015 to 2025, emissions have increased at just 0.3% annually—a stark contrast to the previous decade’s average annual rise of 1.9%. Notably, 35 countries have managed to reduce fossil fuel emissions while growing their economies, showcasing a potential pathway towards sustainable development.
One major contributor to this slowdown in emissions growth is the rapid expansion of renewable energy sources, especially solar power. A recent analysis from the clean energy think tank Ember emphasizes that fossil fuel use for electricity generation is leveling off, even amidst a sharp uptick in electricity demand. This could signal a pivotal shift in the energy sector, with renewable sources increasingly meeting the burgeoning demand.
As global emissions from fossil fuel energy generation begin to plateau, there is cautious optimism. The International Energy Agency suggests that carbon emissions linked to energy systems may peak within the next few years based on current national policies, although achieving net zero emissions remains critical to halt global warming.
While the current projections suggest that current policies could lead to a temperature rise of 2.6°C by the end of the century, the Climate Action Tracker stresses the importance of immediate action at COP30. There is a pressing call for countries to exploit the momentum from renewable energy advancements to break free from reliance on fossil fuels. Experts raise a dichotomy: effectively addressing climate change through innovative technology could greatly improve outcomes, while neglecting necessary action may lead to dire warming scenarios of 2.5°C to 3°C.
