The CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) has raised significant concerns regarding proposed solar farms in Kent that could occupy an area over three times larger than Gatwick Airport. This project, encompassing the Shepway, South Brooks, and South Kent Energy Parks, is said to threaten the unique wildlife habitats and productive farmland of the Romney Marsh area, which the charity deems both fragile and essential.
According to Andrea Griffiths, the CPRE Kent director, the shift towards renewable energy sources should not come at the expense of these vital rural landscapes. In response, CPRE advocates for alternative solar energy solutions, suggesting that solar panels could be installed on existing structures like rooftops of homes and industries or in parking lots. This approach could potentially meet more than 60% of the government’s solar energy targets outlined earlier in the year.
Critics of the solar parks, including national CPRE campaigns leader Jackie Copley, fear the vision of vast expanses of solar panels may fundamentally change the character of the landscape. Meanwhile, representatives from the involved energy companies—SSE Renewables, EDF Power Solutions, and Low Carbon—have indicated they are taking public feedback from consultations seriously and are committed to evaluating the environmental impacts of the projects through a forthcoming environmental impact report.
Spokespersons for these companies emphasize a commitment to design that respects the unique environment of Romney Marsh, including engagement with local wildlife organizations and conducting various surveys to better understand the area’s ecology. They also point out the potential benefits of these energy parks, stating that the South Kent Energy Park alone could supply clean energy to power over 140,000 homes annually while promising restoration of the land after a projected 40 years of operation.
As the debate continues, local stakeholders remain concerned about balancing energy needs with the preservation of the countryside, setting the stage for a contentious discussion on how best to achieve sustainability without losing valuable natural landscapes.
