Scotland’s pioneering commercial wind farm, Hagshaw Hill, has undergone a transformative upgrade, significantly enhancing its capacity to generate clean energy. Located near Douglas in South Lanarkshire, this historic site has replaced 26 older turbines with 14 larger, state-of-the-art installations, resulting in an impressive capability to produce five times more power. The new configuration allows the facility to generate enough electricity to supply approximately 57,000 homes.
ScottishPower Renewables, the company responsible for the upgrade, emphasizes the ecological commitment of the project. Each blade from the original turbines has been allocated for recycling by Plaswire, a manufacturing partner, which will repurpose them into new materials for the construction industry, effectively replacing high-carbon options like concrete, timber, and plastics.
ScottishPower Renewables’ CEO, Charlie Jordan, remarked on the significance of this transformation, stating that repowering such sites is a critical strategy to enhance Scotland’s renewable energy capabilities and meet the ambitious onshore wind targets set for 2030. The new turbines at Hagshaw Hill can produce more than 79 megawatts of clean electricity, marking a notable step forward in the region’s sustainable energy efforts.
This upgrade has also had a positive socio-economic impact, supporting over 100 jobs throughout the decommissioning and modernization process. In addition, a community benefit fund has seen a remarkable increase, now providing nearly £400,000 annually to local areas such as Coalburn, Douglas, Lesmahagow, and Rigside & Douglas Water. This is approximately 26 times more than previous funding levels, reinforcing the company’s investment in local development and employment.
The journey to enhance Hagshaw Hill began with an application made in December 2018 and secured approval by February 2020, culminating in what is now viewed as both a revitalization of a historic wind energy site and a key driver in Scotland’s clean energy future.
