If you are looking to install a 10kW solar system on your property, then you must have enough available roof space to install the necessary amount of solar panels. Typically, a 10kW system will need between 25 to 40 panels, depending on the size of the panels themselves.
In terms of roof space, this will mean that you will need between 47m² and 76m² of available space to install the required amount of panels to your property.
For those that are not familiar with solar panel systems, you may be wondering whether you need to purchase a solar battery. In short, you do not require a solar battery in order to have a functional solar panel system. However, solar batteries provide a host of benefits to any system.
A solar battery storage system provides a battery backup if your solar panels do not produce enough power output to keep your house running as normal. Instead of deferring back to the National Grid, you can rely on your battery storage. This also provides you with additional protection if you were to experience a power outage.
On average, a solar battery will last between 5 to 15 years. This means that you may need to purchase at least two during your solar panel system’s lifetime.
Unlike a solar battery, a solar inverter is a requirement for any functioning solar panel system. This is because solar panels create direct current (DC) when they capture sunlight, however this type of current cannot be used to power household appliances and devices. Instead, you need your inverter to convert the DC into alternating current (AC) which is compatible with your everyday appliances.
Unlike your solar panels, an inverter will last you between 10 to 12 years. So you may need to purchase at least two during your solar panel system’s lifespan.
The amount of electricity a solar panel system can produce is highly dependent on the amount of sunlight they are able to capture. According to the UK Government, for the past three years, the UK has seen between 4.1 to 4.9 hours of sunlight each day, on average.
If your solar panels were to see 4.4 hours of sunlight in one day, your 10kW solar system will be able to produce 44kW of electricity. You will then need to work out how much electricity your household uses to understand whether that will fulfil your requirements. Previously, the UK Government offered the feed in tariff scheme which provided households with payments for the electricity they generated using systems including solar panels, wind, and hydro turbines. However, the scheme has since ended and been replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which is also backed by the Government.
The SEG scheme works in a very similar way to its predecessor. If you have any excess electricity that you have created using a renewable energy system, like a solar panel system, you will be able to sell that electricity back to the National Grid.
Depending on your living conditions, you may be wondering which type of solar panel system is best for your household, a hybrid or on-grid system.
- On-grid system: Rather self-explanatory, an on-grid solar panel system is connected to the National Grid. During the day, your solar panels will power your household using the sunlight that they capture. Then, at night when your panels cannot capture sunlight, you will rely upon the Grid to power your household as you once did.
- Hybrid system: A hybrid solar panel system is exactly the same as the on-grid version, but it also features a solar battery, meaning you rely on the National Grid far less frequently. This will allow you to only use the National Grid supply in rare circumstances as you will be able to rely upon your solar panels producing electricity as you use it, or the stored electricity from the battery during the night-time or overcast days.
Solar panels systems have a predicted lifespan of between 25 to 30 years. Typically, when you purchase a solar system, it will come with a warranty that will last around 25 years as standard. This aims to provide you with peace of mind after making the expensive investment.
