How much money can I save with a 3kW Solar PV System?
The amount of money your 3kW solar system will save you will vary depending on two key factors, which are:
- The amount of electricity your system generates – There are two separate thresholds that your system can meet which will impact the amount of money you could save. The first is your solar system generating enough power to meet your energy consumption level, with the second being your system producing excess energy. If your system is meeting your needs, then you won’t rely upon the National Grid. Whereas if it exceeds expectations, then you could actually make money on your solar power.
- Your energy consumption level – If your household meets the typical household consumption level, then you will save more money. The more energy you use, the greater the chance that your system will not produce enough solar power to meet your needs and you’ll need to purchase additional electricity from the National Grid.
On average, with a 3kW solar system you could see savings of around £270 a year. However, this number will vary depending on the factors mentioned above.
How much does a 3kW solar system cost?
If you want to make your household more energy efficient by purchasing a solar panel system, then you may be wondering how much a system may cost your household.
Typically, a 3kW solar system can cost you around £5,400, however you can pay anywhere up to £7,000. We cannot provide a customer-specific estimated price of every 3kW system, as there are a variety of factors that affect the final price, including:
- The size of the system you require – The greater the energy consumption of your household, the bigger the solar panel system you will require. If a 3kW system doesn’t fulfil your needs, you will need to spend more money on a larger system.
- Installation costs – Depending on the difficulty of installing your solar panel and the location of your property, you may face varying installation costs.
- Solar panel costs – There are a variety of different types of solar panels available on the market with different energy efficiency ratings. The quality of the solar panels and how many panels you require will have a huge impact on the final cost.

3kW Solar System Advantages
Reduce Your Energy Bills
Gain Energy Independence
Become More Environmentally Friendly
3kW Solar System Disadvantages
High Initial Costs
Available Roof Space
The initial price of a solar panel system isn’t the only factor that may hold you back from making the purchase. If you do not have the required roof space to install enough solar panels to fulfil how much power your household requires, then perhaps installing a solar panel system isn’t the ideal energy efficiency solution for your household.
Additionally, if your roof space is awkwardly placed, you may also see an increase in installation cost, which may make a solar panel system more of a pipedream purchase for your household. We’ll never recommend solar panels if they aren’t right for your home.
Greater Dependence On The Weather
Linked with the roof space drawback, the amount of solar power your panels will be able to produce is highly dependent on the weather you experience. Solar panels require sun exposure in order to generate electricity. However, it is important to note that solar energy can still be produced even on cloudy days – your solar panel system will simply be less efficient on these days.
You will also experience the same disadvantage if your solar panels are obstructed. This could relate to your solar panels being placed in shaded areas during the day time, or objects like nearby trees or other properties blocking sunlight from your solar panels.

3kW Solar System FAQs
Some of the most common questions about 3kW solar systems are answered for you here…
While solar batteries are not an essential requirement of a solar panel system, they come highly recommended. By adding a battery storage solution to your solar system, you are providing a source to store excess energy that your solar panels produce.
By purchasing a solar battery system, you can store solar power to use at another time. If you are experiencing a run of overcast days, or perhaps you need additional power during the night time, you can rely upon your solar battery to fulfil your energy consumption needs. Which will also mean that you are less likely to require any electricity from the National Grid, if you were to run short on power.
It is important to note, however, that unlike your solar panels which have a predicted lifespan of around 25 to 30 years, your solar battery will not last as long. Instead, your solar battery will last between 5 to 15 years, meaning you may need to purchase multiple batteries during the lifespan of your solar system.
While solar batteries may not be an essential requirement for your solar panel system, a solar inverter is. Your solar panel system will work to generate direct current (DC) when it is capturing sunlight. However, your home and power appliances will not be able to utilise this type of current.
Instead, your solar inverter will work by converting the direct current into alternating current (AC), which can power your household appliances and devices. Without the presence of a solar inverter in your solar panel system, the solar power your panels produce is rather useless.
Similar to solar batteries, a solar inverter will not last the entire predicted lifespan of your solar panel system. Instead, a solar inverter has the predicted lifespan of 10 to 15 years, meaning you will need to purchase multiple over time.
As we have previously mentioned, there is an opportunity to further cash in on your solar panel system if your solar panels produce more electricity then your household requires. Now, you may be wondering what you can do with this surplus electricity?
The UK Government created the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme which allows UK households to sell any excess electricity back to the National Grid, with energy suppliers paying you for the service. While solar power is one of the most popular methods used in this scheme, you can also sell back any electricity that is produced using: wind, hydro, micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP), and anaerobic digestion (AD) systems.
However, it is important to note that the energy efficiency system (for example a solar panel system) must be installed in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) in order to be eligible for the scheme.
