A new £42 million factory by Schneider Electric has officially commenced production in Scarborough, heralding a significant boost for the local economy. This state-of-the-art facility, which is nearly three times the size of its predecessor, is set to create around 200 new jobs, adding to the 450 existing positions at Schneider’s current base in the town.
Schneider Electric specializes in manufacturing advanced products such as electric vehicle chargers and energy-efficient light sensors. These products play a pivotal role in supporting the UK’s transition towards a more sustainable, net-zero infrastructure, marking the company’s commitment to environmental innovation.
Local MP Alison Hume celebrated the factory’s opening, calling it a “huge day” for Scarborough and emphasizing its potential to uplift the community. Hume noted that the presence of such a significant company could open numerous opportunities for local job seekers, particularly for young people aspiring to remain in their hometown rather than relocating to larger cities for work.
Kelly Becker, president of Schneider Electric in the UK and Ireland, expressed her enthusiasm for the new facility. She highlighted the company’s historical roots in Yorkshire since the 1930s and pointed out the extensive skillsets available in Scarborough, which contributed to the decision to invest within the region. Becker stressed that the long-term investment not only strengthens Schneider’s local footprint but also fosters relationships with local government and educational institutions.
In addition to the new factory, Schneider Electric has announced a separate £7.2 million upgrade for its Leeds site in 2023, further underscoring the company’s commitment to growth in the region. The establishment of this new facility promises to significantly enhance career prospects for residents, enabling them to build families and futures in the beautiful coastal town of Scarborough.
