Birmingham Airport is making significant strides towards sustainability by investing nearly £10 million in a state-of-the-art solar farm. This ambitious project includes the installation of over 12,000 solar panels positioned on the airport’s noise bund, which serves to mitigate noise pollution impacting nearby residential areas.
The solar farm is designed to produce over 20% of Birmingham Airport’s total power requirements, effectively contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions by approximately 1,000 tonnes annually. Simon Richards, the airport’s Chief Finance and Sustainability Officer, highlighted the initiative as a crucial component of their strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2033. He emphasized the ongoing efforts within the aviation industry to minimize carbon output from flights and the vital role of innovative solutions such as the solar farm in this endeavor.
During optimal sunny conditions, the 6.8-megawatt solar installation can generate sufficient energy to completely power the airport, equating to around six gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy per year—enough to supply electricity to more than 2,000 average homes.
Richards also mentioned prior installations of solar panels on the airport terminal rooftops since 2012, which have already helped reduce reliance on the electrical grid. Looking ahead, the airport plans to further enhance its sustainability efforts by transitioning from gas heating to electric heat pumps, marking a comprehensive approach to minimizing environmental impact.
