Councillors in the Scottish Borders have taken a significant step towards sustainable energy by agreeing to not oppose the establishment of a large solar park in the picturesque Lammermuir Hills of Berwickshire. Proposed by Fred Olsen Renewables, the plan entails the installation of approximately 55,000 solar panels situated close to the Crystal Rig wind farm, roughly four miles from the village of Cranshaws. The local planning committee, part of Scottish Borders Council (SBC), has assessed the project within the context of the Lammermuir Hills Special Landscape Area and found it acceptable, choosing not to raise objections.
Berwickshire Councillor Donald Moffat expressed confidence in the scheme, highlighting that the solar panels would be significantly shielded from public view. He stated, “Where these solar panels are being proposed for – unless you are actually going up to drive through the area you won’t see anything,” emphasizing that the development is designed to be discreet and well integrated within the landscape. Moffat further noted that the council’s officers offered their support for the project, indicating a positive outlook among local officials.
While the SBC’s consultation reflects local endorsement, ultimate approval rests with the Scottish government due to the scale of the development. This initiative marks a step forward for renewable energy in the region, potentially contributing to Scotland’s broader goals for sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
