Hundreds of local residents are voicing their objections to a proposed solar farm project planned to be developed next to the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, just south of Epney village. The project, submitted by PACE Tribute Energy Limited, aims to cover over 117 acres of farmland with photovoltaic panels, which, if approved, would generate power for approximately 11,000 homes.
Despite the potential benefits of renewable energy, the proposal has incited considerable backlash, sparking more than 260 comments on the Stroud District Council’s website. Critics argue that the region is already saturated with solar installations, with one resident stating, “It is unreasonable to impose yet another on those of us who live in this area.” Concerns were also raised regarding the noise and traffic problems associated with ongoing construction at nearby solar farms.
Local government representatives, including Gloucestershire County councillor Stephen Davies, have indicated that while residents acknowledge the necessity of solar energy solutions, there is a tipping point to what the community can accommodate. Davies highlighted that the land in question is valuable not just for energy generation but also for food production, labeling the proposed development as an example of “overdevelopment” in an area that already faces strain from existing solar projects.
As the Stroud District Council prepares to vote on this planning application by December, the community remains concerned about the balance between sustainable energy solutions and preserving the integrity of their rural landscape and local agriculture.
