A contentious decision was made in Norfolk as the Broadland District Council approved the construction of a 200-acre solar farm, dubbed the Pettywell solar farm, despite mounting opposition from local residents. The approval came after a long discussion, where four councillors voted in favor while three opposed it. The proposed site, located near Reepham, has drawn considerable backlash primarily due to its classification as “good quality” agricultural land. Critics argue that prioritizing solar energy production over food farming could compromise local agriculture, especially since the farmland has been productive in growing crops such as spring barley and sugar beet.

One of the main voices against the solar project is Hugh Ivins, a former planning consultant residing adjacent to the proposed site. He expressed his belief that it’s vital to maintain the land for food production instead of converting it to energy generation. The council received over 80 objections from residents and the Reepham Town Council, with local MP Jerome Mayhew also echoing concerns. A report from council officers emphasized that 87% of the area slated for the solar farm is categorized as “grade 3a” agricultural land, underscoring its value for food cultivation. However, the report also indicated that this specific land has been primarily used for producing commodity crops, with the UK experiencing a net surplus of these crops in nine out of the last ten years.

In the face of opposition, Albanwise Synergy, which owns nearly 15,000 acres in the county, defended its decision, insisting that the venture aligns with its commitment to both renewable energy and food production. Project manager Chris Banks stated that diversifying into solar energy is essential for contributing to clean energy goals and reducing reliance on foreign energy imports. Although the government advisor Natural England did not raise objections, they stipulated that the solar farm would need to be dismantled after 40 years, returning the land to agricultural use.

As the debate continues, Albanwise is exploring opportunities for additional solar developments, contingent upon the feasibility of connecting new sites to the power network. This case highlights the ongoing tension between expanding renewable energy resources and preserving valuable agricultural land, raising critical questions about land use priorities in the face of climate challenges.

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
