Harnessing Sunshine: SCAS Reveals Major Savings with Solar Panels for Ambulance Services

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) has taken a significant step towards sustainability by announcing that the recently installed solar panels at their resource centre in Eastleigh, Hampshire, could potentially save the service over £32,000 a year. This initiative is part of a broader funding effort where SCAS secured £1 million earlier this year for solar installations across four of its facilities.

With the installation of 609 solar panels at the Winchester and Eastleigh Resource Centre, SCAS is now generating its own solar energy, marking a pivotal point in its mission to cut energy costs and progress toward achieving net-zero emissions. According to Jonathan Guppy, the head of sustainability at SCAS, this installation is considered a “hugely important milestone” in their journey towards reducing operational expenses and environmental impact.

The solar panels, which come with a performance guarantee lasting 25 years, are projected to result in substantial long-term savings, estimating a total of £842,000 in energy costs throughout their lifespan. This funding for renewable energy sources is part of a wider £100 million investment scheme supported by notable entities including the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), Great British Energy (GBE), and NHS England.

GBE is a state-owned initiative established to foster investments in renewable technologies, including solar energy projects for 200 schools and NHS hospitals across the UK, marking a significant shift towards sustainable energy solutions. Guppy emphasized that the benefits from the solar installation at Winchester and Eastleigh are just the start of a comprehensive programme aimed at creating enduring environmental advantages and financial savings for SCAS.

SCAS, which operates across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire, plans to roll out three more solar panel installations in the near future, with locations earmarked for Portsmouth, Abingdon, and Stoke Mandeville. This initiative is expected to further enhance their commitment to sustainability while supporting the welfare of the communities they serve.

Jack Ayre

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
