Exciting developments are underway in the Humber Estuary with plans for a groundbreaking floating power station and a potential small modular nuclear reactor (SMR). Chiltern Vital Group and Freepan Holdings Corp have entered an agreement to investigate the feasibility of mooring a “power barge” near Saltend, aimed at producing electricity using liquefied natural gas (LNG). This initiative is seen as a crucial response to the pressing energy shortages faced by industrial sectors across the UK.
The anticipated power barge is expected to start generating electricity by 2028, addressing urgent supply issues exacerbated by grid connection delays, which could persist into the 2030s. Such delays threaten key investments in sectors like AI and advanced manufacturing, which are vital for the UK’s economic growth and security. Additionally, the UK government has recently confirmed a £2.5 billion partnership with Rolls Royce to develop its first SMRs, signaling a renewed focus on nuclear energy.
SMRs generate power via nuclear fission, and each unit can provide energy for approximately 300,000 homes. With around 80 SMRs currently under development globally, the UK sees potential in this relatively clean and efficient energy source. However, concerns about safety and radioactive waste management continue to loom over nuclear technology.
