Mark Leybourne, co-founder of the energy firm Dyna, highlights Jersey’s capacity to generate 1 to 1.5 gigawatts via wind turbines, capable of powering upwards of a million homes. Guernsey is believed to have a potential even larger, roughly double that of Jersey, suggesting a significant opportunity for energy exports.
Former States of Guernsey deputy Carl Meerveld emphasized that the establishment of wind farms could be revolutionary for the island’s economy, potentially raking in hundreds of millions of pounds annually to fund public services. However, there are concerns about the pace of progress. Meerveld indicated that recent elections have disrupted the momentum needed to capitalize on this opportunity, suggesting that government processes tend to lag behind the private sector’s capacity for swift decision-making.
On Jersey, environment minister Steve Luce expressed a dual perspective among lawmakers; some view the wind farm as a source of revenue from leasing seabed rights, while others prioritize the sustainable energy benefits it would deliver. He acknowledged the urgency of moving forward with wind energy to address the pressing climate crisis, underscoring the islands’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Despite political hesitations, Leybourne cautions that delays could lead to “wind shadowing” effects from French wind farms, potentially diminishing Jersey’s energy generation capacity.
