How Do You Clean Solar Panels Without Damaging Them?

Cleaning your solar panels without damaging them requires care, the right tools, and knowledge of best practices. Solar panels are designed to withstand weather, but not harsh cleaning methods. Here are step-by-step solar panel cleaning tips that ensure safety and efficiency:

1. Use Gentle Cleaning Equipment

The golden rule is: never use abrasive tools. Use a soft brush or a sponge with warm, soapy water. A squeegee with a long extension handle is ideal for rooftop panels.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Only use mild detergents or specially designed solar panel cleaners. Harsh chemicals may degrade the protective coating on panels and reduce their efficiency over time.

3. Never Use Pressure Washers

While tempting, pressure washers can crack the glass surface or damage seals. Stick to low-pressure methods with gentle rinsing using a garden hose.

4. Safety First

If panels are on your roof, assess whether it’s safe to access them. Consider using telescopic poles from ground level or hiring a professional cleaner. Roof safety equipment should be used if climbing is required.

5. Follow Manufacturer Guidelines

Always check with your solar panel manufacturer for cleaning recommendations. Certain coatings or technologies may have unique maintenance needs.

What Tools and Products Should You Use to Clean Solar Panels?

Selecting the proper tools and products is vital for safe and effective cleaning. Here is a comprehensive list of recommended solar panel cleaning equipment:

Recommended Tools:

  • Soft-bristled brush or sponge: Gentle on the glass surface.

  • Extension pole: Allows you to reach panels without needing a ladder.

  • Squeegee: Ideal for drying and streak-free results.

  • Hose with a spray nozzle: To rinse off soap and loosen grime.

  • Deionized water system: Prevents mineral spotting.

Eco-Friendly Products:

  • Biodegradable soap: Gentle on panels and safe for the environment.

  • Vinegar and water mixture: A natural alternative to chemical-based cleaners.

Avoid anything containing ammonia, bleach, or alcohol—these can damage the panel’s surface and protective layers.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Drone inspections: Useful for viewing panel condition without climbing.

  • Panel cleaning kits: Available online with soft brushes and pole extensions.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Clean Solar Panels?

Cleaning time matters! Seasonal shifts impact when and how often solar panels should be cleaned:

Ideal Seasons:

  • Spring: Remove accumulated winter debris like bird droppings, dirt, and grime.

  • Autumn: Clear fallen leaves and dust that build up during dry summer months.

Avoid Midday Cleaning:

Panels can become extremely hot under direct sunlight, which can cause water to evaporate too quickly, leaving streaks or even causing cracks.

Morning or Evening:

Cooler parts of the day are best. Clean early morning after dew loosens dirt or during late evening to avoid overheating the glass.

Weather Considerations:

  • Dry climates: More dust means more frequent cleaning.

  • Wet climates (like the UK): Rain helps, but isn’t enough alone—clean at least biannually.

  • Winter: Avoid icy days but check for snow accumulation and gently remove it if needed.

Can You Clean Solar Panels Yourself or Should You Hire a Professional?

Not everyone needs to clean their panels themselves. The right choice depends on your situation:

DIY Solar Panel Cleaning:

DIY is suitable for:

  • Ground-mounted panels

  • Easily accessible rooftop panels

  • Light dirt or dust

Make sure you have the right tools and safety precautions in place. Always switch off your solar system before starting any cleaning.

Professional Cleaning Services:

Recommended for:

  • Steep or inaccessible roofs

  • Heavily soiled panels

  • Annual performance maintenance

Professionals often use purified water systems and specialized gear to clean without leaving residue. Expect to pay around £60-£100 for a standard residential job in the UK.

Self-Cleaning Solar Panels:

Some newer models come with hydrophobic coatings or automated cleaning systems. However, even these may require occasional manual maintenance to stay efficient.

How Often Should You Clean Your Solar Panels for Maximum Efficiency?

Frequency depends on location, environment, and panel design:

General Guidelines:

  • Twice a year is a good baseline.

  • Quarterly cleaning in dusty, industrial, or bird-heavy areas.

  • After heavy storms to remove debris or mud.

Monitoring System Performance:

Use your solar monitoring system to spot unexpected drops in energy production—it could indicate a need for cleaning.

Visual Inspections:

Walk around your property monthly and check for visible dirt, bird droppings, or shadow-causing obstructions like growing trees.

Long-Term Maintenance Plan:

  • Year 1-3: Biannual check-ups and cleaning

  • Year 4+: Annual professional service for inspection and deep clean

Conclusion: Keep Your Panels Clean & Your Savings High

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your solar panels can improve energy output by up to 20% in some cases. Clean panels work better, last longer, and deliver greater financial savings over time.

Whether you choose to DIY or hire a professional, make sure you’re keeping a consistent cleaning routine. Monitor your energy output, inspect visually, and act when needed.

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
