The Mayor of London has announced the 38 schools across 16 boroughs that will receive support from his £2.9 million Greener Schools pilot. The initiative aims to cut carbon emissions and reduce energy bills by equipping schools with eco-friendly upgrades like solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, and LED lighting.
Councils will contribute an additional £9.6 million to the programme, which City Hall says could save each school nearly £15,000 annually on energy costs. Sustainability projects such as water conservation efforts are also included in the scheme.
Speaking from Avondale Park Primary School in west London, where the pilot launched in December, Mayor Sadiq Khan said the goal is to expand the project nationally. He emphasized the potential savings of over £50 million annually if all London schools adopted similar measures.
“This investment means more money for books, tech, and staff—and cleaner air for our kids,” Khan said, adding that the initiative supports the city’s aim of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The mayor’s office noted the programme has already influenced the government’s new Great British Energy initiative, which will install rooftop solar panels at 200 schools and 200 hospitals.
School leaders welcomed the news. Helen Bruckdorfer, executive headteacher at Camden’s Brecknock and Torriano Federation, said the funding will improve energy efficiency and support their commitment to sustainability. Rachel Carli, headteacher at Durants School in Enfield, said the money would help advance their Climate Action Plan.
