In a significant move for renewable energy, Scotland’s Windy Standard wind farm is set to undergo a transformative repowering project. Originally launched in 1996, this historic wind farm, which is located in Dumfries and Galloway, will see its aging infrastructure replaced with modern technology. Plans approved by the Scottish government pave the way for the decommissioning of the farm’s 36 older turbines, to be replaced by just eight larger and more efficient turbines. This upgrade is expected to double the energy output of the facility, enhancing its contribution to Scotland’s renewable energy goals.
The Windy Standard wind farm holds historical significance as the second largest wind farm in Scotland at the time of its inception. Now, its first phase is granted an extension to operate in the Carsphairn Forest until 2027, beyond its original 25-year lifespan. Emily Galloway, senior project manager at Fred Olsen Renewables, emphasizes the importance of this project not only in terms of energy production but also in honoring the legacy of early wind energy in Scotland. She underscores the commitment to recycling and repurposing materials from the old turbines, with innovative ideas such as using them in local playgrounds.
The repowering initiative also promises a substantial community benefit, with plans to establish a fund exceeding £7 million for local stakeholders. As the project moves forward, Fred Olsen Renewables aims to engage with the community to ensure the benefits of this modernization are widely felt.
