Plans to establish a 200-acre solar farm near Reepham, Norfolk, are moving closer to fruition, despite mounting objections from the local community and officials. Albanwise Synergy, the renewable energy firm behind the development, claims it will supply clean energy to approximately 14,000 homes. However, concerns have been raised by Reepham Town Council and local MP Jerome Mayhew, centering on the potential loss of agricultural land and the aesthetic impact on a rural landscape.
Even though the Pettywell solar farm proposal has received a favorable report from Broadland District Council’s planning committee, which suggests it will contribute to green energy initiatives, about 80 local residents and civic leaders have voiced their opposition. They describe the anticipated structure as an overwhelming industrial development that could drastically alter the character of the area.
This proposal signifies part of a wider trend in Norfolk, where several significant solar farms are under consideration, falling into the category of “nationally significant infrastructure projects.” Consequently, final approval rests with government ministers. Nonetheless, the Pettywell solar farm is comparatively smaller and, if confirmed, would include thousands of solar panels, a substation, and a battery energy storage system with a proposed lifespan of 40 years.
Advocates for the project suggest that, following its operational period, the land could revert back to agricultural use, minimizing long-term impacts. With expectations that the solar farm would offset around 6,471 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and help fulfill the UK’s net-zero targets, the planning committee is urged to approve the project in light of its green credentials.
