A transformative project is underway at the Port of Nigg in Easter Ross, where plans are set to expand the infrastructure significantly, aligning with Scotland’s commitment to renewable energy. Managed by the Japanese firm Mitsui, which has recently acquired the port from the Highland-based Global Energy Group, this ambitious expansion will create an extensive quayside extending into the Cromarty Firth. The new depth of 20 meters (66 feet) will enable the port to accommodate the largest ships and barges, pivotal for loading offshore wind turbines.
This development aligns with Scotland’s strategic goal of enhancing offshore wind energy capabilities and establishing itself as a core player in the green energy sector. The Port of Nigg is identified as a leading asset in one of Scotland’s two designated green freeports, designed to encourage economic growth while adhering to stringent environmental standards.
Parallel to the expansion of the port, Japanese company Sumitomo Electric is also making a significant investment by establishing a £350 million subsea cable factory adjacent to the port. This factory is scheduled to be operational by September of next year, and initial Scottish recruits for its operations team have begun their training in Japan.
As a green freeport, the Port of Nigg enjoys tax incentives and reduced tariffs within designated areas, although it must commit to net-zero emissions and fair labor practices. In February, HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) granted permission for Nigg to implement custom arrangements that will streamline operations by exempting certain taxes and duties on incoming goods, thus bolstering its strategic economic position.
Additionally, Highland and Islands Enterprise is investing £10 million in developing a new heavy-duty quayside, which Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes describes as a potential catalyst for further investment in the region. This series of investments signifies a robust commitment to enhancing Scotland’s renewable energy infrastructure while invigorating the local economy through job creation and technological advancement.
