A controversial proposal is fueling a fierce debate among residents of East Yorkshire, where plans are underway for a wind farm featuring six towering wind turbines, each nearly 500ft tall, near Rudston. This area, celebrated for its scenic beauty and famously captured in David Hockney’s painting Bigger Trees, faces the possibility of being transformed by these structures, which could power around 24,000 homes.

Opinions among locals are deeply divided. Detractors, like resident Michelle Foster, express strong concerns about the impact on their picturesque views, with many describing the turbines as an “eyesore” that would mar their homes’ landscapes. Foster stated her dissatisfaction, mentioning she had received insufficient notice regarding the proposals. Diane Trudgett, another local who moved to the area specifically for its beautiful scenery inspired by Hockney’s work, lamented the prospect of having wind turbines spoiling her view.

In contrast, some residents see the wind farm as a step toward progress and environmental responsibility. Sue Ezard voiced her support for green energy initiatives, believing that advancing toward sustainable solutions is essential. Michael Marven, who lives nearby, highlighted the need for balance between environmental benefit and visual disruption. He acknowledged the growing number of turbines in the region but emphasized the importance of preserving the area’s beauty.

The project, managed by Ridge Clean Energy (RCE), is part of a broader government push for green energy and aims to streamline planning processes to accelerate the development of renewable energy sources. In addition to the turbines, RCE promises a £5 million community benefit fund if the project is approved, raising the stakes for local residents and businesses who must weigh the immediate visual impact against potential long-term benefits.

Interestingly, Hockney himself has previously criticized wind turbines as “big ugly things” that he would not depict in his art, adding another layer of complexity to the debate. The proposal must navigate the local sentiment and the government’s aggressive objectives for renewable energy as it moves forward. As this becomes one of the largest onshore wind projects proposed in England in recent years, the outcome could significantly influence future endeavors in the area.

Residents are expected to have their voices heard during consultations, as RCE encourages community engagement to discuss the plans and gather opinions. With the landscape of what many consider “Hockney Country” on the line, how the community responds could shape not only their environment but also the future of wind energy developments in England.

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
