In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable energy, a farm in Gaitsgill, near Dalston in Cumbria, has been granted planning permission to construct a small plant dedicated to generating renewable electricity from animal waste. Dobcross Hall, the farm in question, plans to install a micro-scale anaerobic digester that will utilize slurry from its dairy herd, converting this abundant waste into both electricity and fertilizer for agricultural use.
The Cumberland Council has expressed its support for the development, emphasizing that it will have no detrimental effects on the living conditions of nearby residents, the surrounding highways, or local biodiversity. A report by a council planning officer praised the “scale, design, and siting” of the machinery, asserting that it was appropriate for the area and would maintain the integrity of the picturesque rural landscape.
Strategically located next to existing agricultural buildings, the digester’s placement aims to minimize its visual impact, ensuring that it blends seamlessly into the rural setting. Furthermore, the only nearby residential structure, Dobcross Cottage, which accommodates farm workers, is situated on higher ground, distancing it from the proposed facility.
