A newly approved biogas plant in Evenley, Northamptonshire, is sparking mixed reactions among local residents and stakeholders. Designed to convert manure into renewable energy, the facility aims to power approximately 8,000 homes while providing supplemental income to local farmers. However, community concerns center around potential traffic increases, unpleasant odors, and the impact on the picturesque countryside.
Initially rejected by West Northamptonshire Council in 2023 for insufficient information, the project has undergone significant restructuring. At a recent planning meeting, council members dedicated two hours to discussing the updated scheme. Alister Veitch, the business development manager for Acorn Bioenergy, reassured attendees that the plant’s design incorporated advanced measures to control and mitigate odors, emphasizing that careful modeling had been conducted to ensure the facility would not emit unpleasant smells.
The biogas plant will utilize a mix of straw, maize, grass, and both poultry and dairy manure as feedstock, which will be processed in anaerobic digesters to produce biogas. This biogas will then be purified into biomethane and transported for integration into the National Grid. Experts, including chartered soil scientist Anna Becvar, praised the project for employing the latest industry technologies to reduce emissions effectively.
Despite these assurances, local opposition remains strong, with nearly 1,000 objections lodged against the plant’s proposal. Cathy Ellis, chairman of the Evenley Parish Council, argued that such an industrial installation would be undesirable for residential areas. Resident Sue Ricketts expressed her belief that the scale and impact of the development would be detrimental to both individuals and the surrounding natural environment. Conversely, local farmers like Andrew Thompson voiced support for the project, highlighting potential economic benefits, including guaranteed income from break crops produced between cereal harvests.
