Wales is stepping into the future with a bold initiative of state-backed wind farms aimed at propelling the country towards renewable energy independence. The new publicly owned developer, Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru (Green Electricity Wales), has announced the selection of three strategic sites for wind farm development across the country – Carmarthenshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the Conwy-Denbighshire region. This project is projected to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 25% of Welsh homes, potentially supporting the electricity needs of up to 350,000 homes.

Launched in 2024, with ambitions to develop 1 GW of renewable energy on government-owned land by 2040, Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru aims to ensure that profits from these renewable projects are reinvested within local communities. Inspired by successful international models, such as Sweden’s Vattenfall, the initiative seeks to tackle the growing energy demands in Wales, where electricity consumption is expected to nearly triple by 2050.

The three proposed projects include:

  • Clocaenog Dau: Featuring up to 22 turbines, this site is located near Llyn Brenig on the Conwy-Denbighshire border.
  • Glyn Cothi: This wind farm, positioned near Brechfa in Carmarthenshire, will include 27 turbines.
  • Carreg Wen: Located between Aberdare and Maerdy in Rhondda Cynon Taf, this site plans for 18 turbines.

Not only is the total estimated construction cost around £500 million, but the projects are expected to create about 650 construction jobs and over the lifespan of these wind farms, they promise 40 direct and 55 indirect jobs.

As part of Wales’ renewable energy strategy, the government aims to achieve 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, escalating to 100% by 2035. Despite the enthusiasm from the government, local opposition has been voiced by groups like the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW), which questions the need for so many onshore wind farms, advocating instead for the exploration of off-shore alternatives.

With plans underway to engage the community through public information events, and formal planning applications expected by 2027, the future of these wind farms is set to be shaped by a combination of governmental ambition, public input, and environmental considerations. Elsie Grace from Natural Resources Wales assures that any infrastructure will be carefully integrated into the natural landscape, prioritizing minimal tree clearance and the protection of sensitive ecological features.

Born in North West England, Jack kicked off his career in the insurance arena, dealing with claims for three years. Always up for a challenge, Jack leapt out of his comfort zone and embarked upon 5 years of excitement with the military.

Working for the Ministry of Defence, Jack specialised in counter-terrorism which took him to places such as Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Norway and Bahrain. During this period he worked with various Governments implementing strategic operations to prevent terrorism.

After travelling around various countries Jack increasingly came across various forms of solar from large solar farms to domestic solar panels. From here Jack took a keen interest in all things solar and started reading about the technological capabilities with a view to entering the industry after his career in the Ministry of Defence.

Once home after 5 fruitful years, Jack had 3 months leave in which he immersed himself in a solar crash course and got applying for jobs within the solar sector. He came across ESE Solar, a long-established forward-thinking company whose head office was only a stone’s throw away from him. He picked up the phone to see if there were any vacancies and within a week had a successful interview and obtained a full-time job, starting in the technical team.

Within the first few months, Jack onboarded in various online courses during work and social hours to speed up his knowledge of all things solar. Due to his strong work ethic and thirst for knowledge Jack was promoted to Head of Technical at ESE Solar. He currently leads the team and oversees the product development of new technologies within the company alongside assisting where necessary on their maintenance department.
